President’s Message:

The gallery is nearly complete and it is beautiful! All that remains is to put a countertop on the newly built and beautiful cabinet running along the front wall. If you haven’t seen it, come to the 1st Friday Art Walk on April 6th (5 to 8 p.m.) and take a look. Now we are turning our attention to the school or classroom part of our Art Center. We want to lower the ceiling, put in new lighting, build the library shelves, install a new mini-kitchen and generally make it look and work better for classes.

How are we going to afford to do this? With your support, dear friends!

Last year Vicky Mainzer and Peggy Johnson put on a wonderful musical and visual arts show that got rave revues from all who attended and gave us most of the funds to do the gallery. This year Vicky is in the process of doing another show called “Musical Hearts for the Arts” to be performed on Saturday, June 23rd. The classroom will be renovated with the proceeds from this show.

We are asking each Art Center member to take the responsibility of buying or selling at least two tickets.

Bring a friend and come enjoy the show! Tickets remain the same price as last year and if you watch the productions going on around our area, our price is amazingly low. The dinner patron’s ticket is just $50. For this amount you get a light buffet dinner (make your meal choices from the beautiful tables served by eight of our best local eateries), the musical, and then wonderful desserts by the Continental Bistro buffet after the show. The $20 entry ticket will get you into the musical with the coffee and dessert bar following. What a great value! And you are helping the worthy cause at the Art Center.

Last year’s production was a huge hit and we expect tickets to sell out this year. We advise you to call the Art Center to reserve your tickets, or block of tickets soon. We would like to make sure our members get first chance at them.

The raffle is a great value too. The prizes include a night at the Black Swan Inn, a digital camera, and many other wonderful items. $1 per ticket or 6 for $5

Let’s all work together to make the classroom as light, clean and uncluttered as the gallery!

Teacher’s Storage Space

We are working on a storage space for artists who are teaching a class so they won’t have to take everything out each week. This space may end up in the back classroom, but artists can temporarily use the gallery cabinet for storage. We hope you enjoy this new “perk.”

Calling All Artists!

The hanging display in August is traditionally painted from photographs. Our April show will have many wonderful photos to pick your subject matter from. We invite every artist to pick out a photograph in April, request a print, and paint from it for the August show.

City Offices Display

The 2nd quarter starts April 1st so it is time for Jim Mariani to collect and hang new paintings at the City Office. Please bring your paintings in to the Art Center between April 7th and April 12th. All media, sizes and subjects are welcome. It has worked well to have two pieces per artist. If you have art displayed now, you can pick it up following the 12th during regular open hours at the Art Center.

We have two new artist/instructors joining our teaching staff in April and May. The first class will be taught by Tim Goodworth who has been featured in Southwest Arts Magazine. He has a painterly, loose realistic style and his subject matter is western themes. He will be teaching intermediate oils.

He was born in Pocatello, ID and he holds an Associate’s degree in fine arts from Rick's College; bachelor’s degree in painting from USU; and is currently working on a Master’s in Fine Arts at ISU. We hope you will take advantage of a new perspective on teaching (as every new instructor brings) and sign up for his class.
Our second new artist/instructor to join our teaching staff this year is David Story who has a BA in Fine Arts from Washington State University, and an Art Teaching Certification from BYU.

He is a retired homebuilder and remodeler currently living in Inkom He will be teaching a class on the use of Gouache. He states: “It has the unique ability to be washed and blended as a watercolor, or used opaquely like an oil.” We are excited to be able to offer a class in this medium. It will be a new medium for many of us.

Judged Show in June
Barbara Swanson

Get your best works of art ready for the annual judged show which will  be held June 1-30.

The general guidelines for the show state that work must have been completed in the last three years. However, I encourage everyone to  enterwork that has been completed more recently and/or hasn't been hung  before at the art center. Our brand new, fresh gallery deserves our  best, new, fresh art work.

Check out the guidelines on page 11 of the Directory to see whether you are an amateur, intermediate or professional artist. If you are a beginner don't be shy about showing your best. We all started out as amateurs.

There will be 6 categories this year: 1) oil, acrylic, pastel; 2) watercolor; 3) drawing-pencil, colored pencil, pen and ink; 4) photography, digital art; 5) mixed media, collage; 6) three dimensional — sculpture, ceramics, porcelain, jewelry.

Artists may enter up to two items in up to two categories. The fee is  $25 per category entered. Art center dues ($25) must be paid by May  30th . Check for your dues anniversary date near your name on the Newsletter mailing label or call the art center for that information -- 232-0970.
