President’s Message

My heart is full of gratitude as I think of these last two years I spent as president of the Pocatello Art Center. There are so many wonderful people who gave their time and talent to keep things running and who helped in the growth we have enjoyed. It’s impossible to ever name everyone but I would like to try. If I miss you, please accept my apology and please know that you were and are appreciated.

My official advisors were Jerry Younkin and Sybil Rainwater. They were valuable assets and always gave me good input. Jan Stanek as former president and Barbara Santos made sure things ran smoothly and were always there to help guide the Art Center in the right direction. Frankie Saul was also especially helpful to me.

The officers I served with have become good friends. I love and appreciate each one of you (past and present). They include our V.P. Barbara Santos, Treasurer Carolynn Mouritsen and Secretaries Dorothy Brzek and Carolyn Purnell.

The Board of Directors have been much appreciated. They kept us on an even keel, promoting the good ideas and gently rejecting the not so good ideas. Some of them have a long history with the Art Center and could always tell us what the practice had been in the past. But they certainly weren’t “stuck in the past,” as you can see by looking at the new things we are doing and how the Art Center has grown.

The Committee Chairmen we have had over the last two years have been outstanding performers. They include The Sagebrush Arts Fest chairs Barbara Swanson and then Carolyn Purnell. Education chairs were Lorraine Wight then Jeanne Hand. Publicity chairs were Peggy Anderson, Peggy Johnson, then Lorraine Wight. Membership chair was Barbara Santos. The Gallery chair was L.D. Wolfley. Capital Campaign chair was Jan Stanek. Anne Merkley is our Facilities chair, and Bertie North is our excellent Housekeeping chair. There were others who volunteered and worked for a time on some of these committee chairmanships, our thanks to all who were involved.

We also created some new committees. Dorothy Brzek has been our “hostess with the mostest,” as Hospitality chair. Jim Mariani is in charge of hanging the City Hall artwork every quarter. Ella Rast chaired the 2nd Thursday programs until the 1st Friday Art Walks got going. Ella also chaired the Artist’s Studio Tour. This list does not include the many others who helped or headed other jobs like the Judged Show (Barbara Swanson), the High School Invitational (Jan Stanek) or the children’s Saturday classes (Patt McNamara). Too many to name but all helped to make this a successful two years in the Art Center history.

We appreciate the many teachers (and especially the ones who give classes again and again), you are the ones who bring in new students and members. Taking one of the excellent classes has shown many, many people the value of what we are doing for the visual arts in our area.

The most incredible thing that took place in this two years was the gallery upgrade. Vicky Mainzer conceived and executed this most remarkable accomplishment in one wonderful musical that the community loved and thought was one of the best they have ever seen in Pocatello. Since the Art Center’s main focus is on the classes they provide, we are hoping to raise enough to bring the classroom up to par.

Imagine! In one short evening we can raise enough to completely redo the classroom, but it will take your help. We are asking each member to be responsible for the purchase of two tickets, either patron or regular. Bring your friends and come enjoy the show! Tickets are available now, please call the Art Center at 232-0970 to reserve yours. If you cannot pick them up, we will deliver. All proceeds go to the Art Center. Literally dozens of musicians, artists and others are donating their time and talent to make this show a success. We can each do our part by buying the tickets and attending .

Annual Meeting
The Annual Meeting will be at the Art Center on Thursday, June 7th at 11:30 a.m.

We will elect our new slate of officers, present the new By-Laws you all voted on, and enjoy a potluck luncheon.

Please come and help us thank the outgoing officers for all of their work over the last two years, and welcome the new president and vice president in!

Carolynn Mouritsen has agreed to stay on as Treasurer and Carolyn Purnell will remain Secretary.

Please bring something yummy to share for lunch, we will furnish plates, glasses, silverware, coffee and punch.

LIFE

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming WOW—What a Ride!

Camp Perkins

Camp Perkins Art Retreat
Pocatello Art Center is sponsoring our 3rd annual art retreat at Camp Perkins in the beautiful Sawtooth Mountains near Stanley, Idaho. We invite you to join us September 17–22nd for an adventure of painting outdoors, fabulous meals, and warm fellowship! The cost is $300 (includes room and board for 4 nights and 5 days), 2 per room with bath. Our group is housed in the Retreat Center which has motel-like accommodations.

Space is limited, and many artists are planning on the event. A $100, non-refundable deposit due July 1st will secure your space. There is a sign-up sheet on the desk at the Art Center.

Contact the Art Center or Jerry Younkin at 234-0473 for more information.

Or see: www.campperkins.org

It has been said that nature is the best teacher for artists.

Art in the Garden

Jerry Younkin has gathered a talented group of artists to paint with on Saturday, June 2 from 10 until 4 p.m. at the Pinehurst Floral and Nursery. We hope to see you all there…and that you will choose to buy your hanging plants and other beautiful flowers there on that Saturday because Pinehurst donates a percentage of sales made that day to the Art Center. Let’s make this a successful day of painting in that lovely atmosphere surrounded by colorful flowers!

Display Rack in the Gallery

The display rack is a good opportunity for all artist members to display and sell their unframed art. Guidelines are:

  • Work must be the original work, giclee or numbered prints.
  • You can display 5 originals or prints.
  • Watercolor and photos must be matted and wrapped or in a plastic sleeve for protection.
  • Oils need no matt but must be wrapped.
  • All pieces must include price.
  • Checks will be written directly to the artist when pieces sell.
  • Please stop in at least weekly to see if you have a sale. Artwork will remain in rack 60 to 90 days.
This is a new project, please bear with us!
Sagebrush Arts Fest

Carolyn Purnell is looking for help on this September show. If you would like to get involved, please call her at 716-1817.

Judged Show
